Scientific research on the Agreement from November, 19, 2011¹ 11.G34.31.0065 between the Ministry of education and science of the Russian Federation, State Budget Educational Institution of Higher Professional Learning “Kuban State Medical University” of the Ministry of Health Care and Social Development of the Russian Federation, and leading scientist Paolo Macchiarini managing a scientific research project on the provision of the monetary grant of the Government of the Russian Federation designed to support research projects implemented by leading scientists at Russian institutions of higher learning.

The direction of the project: “Molecular and cell biology, biotechnology, regenerative medicine”. The title of the project: “The research of molecular mechanisms and correlations of the regeneration process for the development of regenerative medicine approaches in the field of tissue engineering and cell therapy of the respiratory ways and the lungs”.

Aim: the development of new approaches in tissue engineering and cell therapy for regeneration of airways and pulmonary tissue, the search for the optimal methods, transfer of the acquired methods into clinical practice.

Scientific tasks: the study of molecular mechanisms of regeneration and their reconstruction in different types of mammals, including primates.

Technological tasks: the creation and development of different methods of regenerative medicine on the basis of the acquired scientific results. The creation of technologies of tissue engineering and cell therapy for airways and lung growing. The approaches towards the creating of other organs - heart, liver, bile ducts, pancreas – by bioengineering methods.

Biomedical tasks: the transfer of these methods into clinical practice as a complete alternative for the donor organs transplantation and for treatment and prevention of a wide range of diseases which are considered to be incurable at the present moment (diseases of airways, replacement of tissues and organs, affected by oncologic diseases, inoperable cancer, liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis etc.).

Perspective tasks: the creation and development of technologies for growing and transplantation of skin, cornea. The creation of specific structures – Stem Cells and Tissues Bank, including bone marrow cells, umbilical blood stem cells, Bio Trachea Laboratory, capable of producing biomaterials for clinical purposes.

Educational tasks: training of Russian specialists in the field of cell technologies and regenerative medicine on the base of leading European laboratories. The creation of educational base for training of future specialists in the field of regenerative medicine from different medical and scientific institutions of Russia as the second stage of the program.

Expected results: - scientific results – data on the stem cells “behaviour”, mechanisms of their development and differentiation are expected to be gained. These data are absolutely necessary for understanding of all the processes taking place in the organism, for managing these cells and for targeted use of cell therapy and regenerative technologies. - medical results – regenerative medicine technologies transferred into clinical practice will allow avoiding donor organs transplantation in case of incurable diseases as well as expanding the possibilities for life quality improvement and healthy aging.

The created International scientific-research clinical-educational centre of regenerative medicine on the base of the Kuban state medical university is going to be the platform for the development and introduction of new regenerative technologies as well as the educational base for the training of future specialists in the field of regenerative medicine from different medical and scientific institutions of Russia.
